Teacher's Notes of THE SUGAR GLIDER
Title:
A Cultural approach to The Sugar Glider.
Level:
Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate (for adults and young adults).
Subject:
English as a Second Language.
Aims:
Introducing cultural information about Australia thanks to the use of graded reader books. Enhancing their interest and motivation. Practicing oral, writing, listening and reading skills: Oral skills (talking to their partners and giving a speech to the rest of the group), extensive reading comprehension, writing skills such as summarizing or writing a biography or composing a poster, and listening skills by the use of multimedia movies.
Contents:
Reading comprehension of the book The Sugar Glider. Cultural reading and exercises about Australia: Facts and Figures, Australia: Fauna and Flora, Aborigines: The Murri People and Australian Artists: Music and Show business. Tourist information about Australia.
Timing:
2-3 sessions: The first session is compulsory and must be monitored by the teacher. The second one is optional and doesn't need a direct monitoring of the teacher because students can carry it out autonomously in the computer room, in the school library or in their own home following the instructions given in the Process section of this Webquest.
1st. session
Completion and/or oral correction of the PDF copy of the Cambridge English Readers level 5 Worksheet of The Sugar Glider.
Completion of the cultural approach exercises: "Australia: Facts and Figures" and "Australia: Fauna and Flora". Correction on line if students are completing the Hot Potatoes version of the exercises.
If there is time, The whole group enters the tourist links included in the Conclusion section.
2nd. session
Non-compulsory activity for the whole group. Exercise for a section of students willing to be marked on their individual oral or writing skills: They write a composition or biography, make a poster or prepare a speech introducing the Murri people or the Australian artists to the rest of the classroom. They must choose one of the options offered in the Process section (2.3, 2.4) of this Webquest.
3rd. session
Speeches and presentation of projects about "Aborigines: The Murri People" and "Australian Artists: Music and Show business". Exchange of ideas and group discussion about what they have heard or read.
The whole group surfs the tourist links included in the Conclusion section (if they weren't been able to do so in the 1st session).
