PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE:

USES
  • Use the present perfect to talk about something that started in the past and continues up to the present.
    • To say how long something has continued, use FOR and SINCE.


  • Use the present perfect to talk about experiences in our lives, up to now.
    • EVER and NEVER are often used with present perfect.
  • Use the present perfect to talk about a past action, when we can see the result of the action now.

PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS:

USES
  • Use the present perfect  continuous for an action over a period of time leading up to the present.
    • We are interested in the action as well as the result.
    • This process may be going on or may just have finished.
  • You can use the present perfect  continuous for  actions repeated over a period of time.

  • JUST:
    • MEANING: A short time ago.
    • POSITION: Before the past participle.
  • ALREADY:
    • MEANING: Before expected / before now.
    • POSITION: Before the past participle.
  • YET:
    • MEANING: Until now / up to now.
    • POSITION: Usually at the end.
    • USE: In negative sentences and questions.

  • EVER:
    • USE: In negative sentences and questions.
    • MEANING: At any time in your life.


  • NEVER:
    • USE: In affirmative sentences.
    • MEANING: At no time in your life.

    • MEANING: Questions about periods of time.

    • MEANING: Period of time.

    • USE: With present perfect simple and continuous.

  • PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE
    • USE:
      • Time until now.
        • For something that started in the past and continues up to the present.
        • To talk about an indefinite time up to the present (with “ever”, “never”).
  • PAST SIMPLE
    • USE:
      • With a finished time.
        • For something that started and finished in the past.
        • To talk about a definite time in the past (last year, yesterday…).
      • To ask when something happened.
        • “When?”, “What time?”
