- It is a conjunction and introduces a clause, especially with verbs of
speaking and knowing.
- “As you know”, “as I said”, “as she expected”, “as I thought”…
- Example: Do exactly as I say.
- It is used in comparisons: as …as.
- Example: He’s not as talented as his brother (is).
- It is used to talk about a job or function.
- Example: She works as a fashion model (She is a model).
- Example: I’m using this tin as an ashtray.
- AS is also a linking word:
- AS + IF = AS + THOUGH: It is used before a clause to say how something
seems.
- Example: Tom looks really awful. He looks as if he’s been up all
night.
- AS SOON AS = Immediately after.
- AS LONG AS = If, on condition that.
- AS = While.
- AS = Because.
- AS WELL= Too.
- Fixed expressions:
- As usual / as always
- Regard … as.
- Example: I regard her as my best friend.

meaning: “similar to, the same as”.
- Example: He fought like a madman (but he’s not a madman)
- Example: She’s a teacher, like me.
- You can also say “like (sbody/sthing) doing something”.
- Example: It sounds like a baby crying.
- Sometimes LIKE = For example, such as.
- Example: Some sports, like motor racing, can be dangerous.
- In American English, and sometimes in informal spoken British English,
LIKE can be used before a clause.
- Example: Let’s do it, like we agreed.
